How SCSS actually works
The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme pays simple interest quarterly — every three months, P × rate ÷ 4 lands in your account. The principal comes back in full after 5 years (extendable by 3). At 8.2%, it's the highest guaranteed rate available to retirees.
- Who can open: 60+, or 55+ on retirement (within 1 month), or 50+ on superannuation. One person, one account logic — ₹30L cap per individual.
- Tax: deposit qualifies for 80C (up to ₹1.5L); interest is fully taxable, with TDS above ₹1,00,000/year for seniors.
- Premature closure: allowed after 1 year with a penalty (1.5% before 2 years, 1% after). Don't lock emergency money here.
FAQs
SCSS vs POMIS vs FD for retirees?
SCSS (8.2%) beats POMIS (7.4%) and most FDs on rate, with quarterly payouts. POMIS has no age bar and a lower cap. Use SCSS for the income core if eligible.
Can both spouses open SCSS?
Yes — the ₹30 lakh cap is per individual, so a couple can hold ₹60 lakh combined.
Is SCSS interest really quarterly?
Yes — credited on Apr 1, Jul 1, Oct 1 and Jan 1. Simple interest, not compounded: the payout doesn't grow over time.
