Why your salary isn't your CTC

CTC (cost to company) is what you cost your employer — not what you receive. Three chunks never reach you: the employer's PF contribution (12% of basic, goes to your EPF), gratuity accrual (~4.81% of basic, paid only if you complete ~5 years), and often insurance premiums baked into the CTC.

FAQs

What is a good take-home ratio?
Roughly 70–75% of CTC as monthly take-home (before income tax) is typical for a 40–50% basic structure. Below 65% usually means heavy variable pay or deductions — ask for the breakup.
Is employer PF part of my salary?
It's part of your CTC and it's your money — credited to your EPF account monthly. But you can't spend it now, which is why take-home excludes it.
Does this include income tax?
No — TDS depends on your regime, deductions and other income. This shows take-home before income tax; run our income tax calculator for the final number.
Why is professional tax different across states?
It's a state levy: Maharashtra charges ₹2,500/year, Karnataka ₹2,400, some states nothing. Your employer deducts it monthly.
