How NSC actually works
The National Savings Certificate is a 5-year post-office instrument: you invest once, interest compounds annually, and everything is paid out at maturity. The rate is locked for your certificate at purchase — later rate changes don't affect you.
- The tax trick: deposit qualifies for 80C. The yearly interest is technically taxable — but it's deemed reinvested, so it also qualifies for 80C each year (except the final year's). Net effect: nearly tax-free for most.
- No premature withdrawal except on death or court order. This is lock-in-and-forget money.
- NSC vs 5-year FD: NSC (7.7%) currently beats most bank 5-year FDs, with the 80C edge on top. FDs win on liquidity.
FAQs
Can minors hold NSC?
Yes — a guardian can purchase on a minor's behalf, and minors above 10 can operate singly in some cases.
Is NSC interest really tax-free?
Not literally — but the reinvested interest qualifies for 80C deduction each year except the last, which wipes out most of the tax for typical investors.
Can I take a loan against NSC?
Yes — NSC is accepted as collateral by banks, a useful emergency backdoor given there's no premature withdrawal.
