How EPF actually works
Every month, 12% of your basic + DA goes to EPF from your salary, and your employer adds another 12%. (Technically 8.33% of the employer's share — up to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling — goes to the EPS pension scheme; this calculator treats the full 24% as EPF corpus for simplicity.) The balance compounds at the EPFO-declared rate, currently 8.25%.
- It's EEE if you wait. EPF is exempt-exempt-exempt — contributions get 80C deduction, interest is tax-free, withdrawal is tax-free — provided you complete 5 continuous years of service. Withdraw earlier and the tax benefits unwind.
- Never withdraw when switching jobs. Transfer the PF instead. Every withdrawal resets the 5-year clock and, worse, breaks decades of compounding.
- VPF: the hidden superpower. You can voluntarily contribute beyond 12% (VPF) at the same 8.25% tax-free rate — often better than an FD for the debt portion of your portfolio.
FAQs
What is the current EPF interest rate?
8.25% for FY 2024-25, declared by EPFO. The rate is revised every year — edit it above if a new rate is announced.
EPF vs PPF?
EPF (8.25%) currently beats PPF (7.1%) on rate, and both are EEE. EPF is automatic via salary; PPF is voluntary with a ₹1.5L/year cap. Use both if you can.
Can I withdraw EPF for a house or emergency?
Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific needs (home purchase, medical, education) after certain service periods — but each withdrawal shrinks the retirement corpus. Treat it as a last resort, not a savings account.
What happens to EPS?
The pension part (EPS) pays a monthly pension after 58 based on your pensionable salary and service years — separate from this EPF corpus. This calculator focuses on the withdrawable EPF lump sum.
